TED: Robert Ballard Ocean Exploration Talk
1. What does NOAA stand for?
NOAA stands for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
2. How much bigger is NASA's budget than NOAA's?
NASA's budget is 1,006 times bigger than NOAA's budget.
3. Why do we not have good maps of the ocean?
We don't have good maps of the ocean because we haven't seen lots of the ocean.
4. How much of the United States lies beneath the sea?
50% of the US lies beneath the sea.

The Mid-Ocean Ridge covers about 23% of the Earth's surface.
7. Why does most of our planet not feel the warmth of the Sun?
Most of our planet does not feel the warmth of the Sun because the photons can't reach the regular depth of 12,000
8. What did they find in the deep oceans? Explain.
They found underwater hot spring/chimneys, hydro thermal vents tube worms, chemosynthesis, giant clams, bacteria, heavy metals and other life forms.

The average depth of the oceans is 12,000 ft.
10. What is telepresence?
Telepresence is the idea the idea you are virtually present, not physically present.
11. What is the Okeanos Explorer? What is its mission?
The Okeanos Explorer is an e. Navy ship. Its mission is to go where no one has gone in the ocean on Earth.

Thoughtful Questions
1. Why are we ignoring the oceans?
We are ignoring the oceans because people are scared of what lies in the oceans. From experience, when you are scared of something, you would normally not investigate it, and try to stay away from whatever you are scared of. For example, I am scared of the dark. Yes, childish, I know. When in a pitch-black room, I try to find something that can serve as a light source, as I have gotten used to staying away from the dark. Since I am used to ignoring the dark, investigating the darkness won't come to my mind when I'm in a situation like that. People have been ignoring the ocean since they never really wanted to investigate the ocean. In my opinion, that is what stems fears in people. You need an open mind to not be scared of anything, so you'll know how to react.
2. What do you think about think about living at sea?
I think it would be pretty cool to live at sea because you'd be surrounded by the ocean. To me, seeing the ocean gives off a sense of freedom, much like the sky. During our normal lives, I feel that we're restricted somehow. If you were to live at sea, there aren't many limitations.
3. Why is it important to explore our oceans?
It is important to explore our oceans because we can get a better understanding of the unexplored world. There may be some things pertaining to certain subjects in the ocean, such as old sunken ships. We may have not recorded most of the historical treasures because they are under the sea. We also might find a new species or form of something in the sea. It might be something that is beneficial for their environment, or something dangerous. I also prefer we explore the seas before space. Don't get me wrong, but I love space and the mysteries in there, but in my opinion, I would rather have a better understanding of the planet we have now so we can know how to preserve our planet long enough before looking into what planets we can inhabit, or if there's any life forms on those planets. It's either the previous statement, or the two could switch off with research.
