Sound Wave Notes
There are 2 types of waves we learned about today: S-Waves (shear) and P-Waves (pressure)
- S-Waves travel like a wave in the ocean
- P-Waves travel by pushing the one wave in front of it.
- P-Wave can also be referred to as Primary Wave, and S-Wave can be Secondary Wave.
- These waves can also cause earthquakes. You feel the P-Waves first, as they are faster
- For waves to travel, they need vibration and a median (matter).
- Sound travels through closer compressed areas.
- Sound is also directional, meaning it travels one way.
- If an object has a high density, sound will travel fast.
- Sound travels faster through water, as water is more dense.
- Sound travels the slowest in the middle.
- This is called the SOFAR Channel.
- Sounds reflect against each other in the SOFAR Channel
- Sound does not travel in the Shadow Zone.
